Mount Zion Church of God in Christ

Tucked away on Ottawa Street, Mount Zion Church of God in Christ began not with grand pronouncements, but in a home. In 1945, within the walls of Deacon and Sister Lewis Hinton’s residence at 439 Ottawa Street, the seeds of Mount Zion were sown. This wasn’t just any house. It was a place filled with the spirit, a testament to the Hinton’s devotion. They reached out to Bishop C.L. Anderson, seeking spiritual leadership for their burgeoning congregation. Bishop Anderson answered their call by sending Elder DeLewis Sanders. He became Mount Zion Church of God in Christ’s first pastor. Under Elder Sanders’ guidance, the church thrived, witnessing countless souls finding solace and salvation within its humble beginnings. The 1950s brought economic hardship to the city. Many members of Mount Zion Church of God in Christ, seeking employment, were forced to leave. The congregation dwindled. Yet, even amidst adversity, the church persevered. It continued to grow, its spirit unbroken. A new chapter began in 1963. Elder B.T. Stephen, upon leaving for Flint, Michigan, recommended a young minister. This young man, Elder George M. Bennett, was entrusted with the spiritual well-being of Mount Zion Church of God in Christ. Officially installed by State Bishop Charles I. Johnson in October, Elder Bennett would guide the church for decades to come. The congregation at Mount Zion Church of God in Christ continued to grow. In 1981, discussions began about finding a larger space. The former Evangelical Covenant Church on 188 West Muskegon Avenue presented an opportunity. The congregation toured the property, excitement filling the air. Pledges were made, and in October 1982, the purchase was finalized. The inaugural service in their new home was held on November 6th, a testament to their faith and perseverance. Mount Zion Church of God in Christ celebrated its Golden Anniversary in 1995. A few years later, in 1998, the mortgage was burned during the church’s 21st Annual Old Fashion Christian Family Reunion service, a moment of triumph and joy. After 43 years of dedicated service, Administrative Assistant George M. Bennett passed away on March 10, 2007. His legacy, however, continued. Elder Duane E. Bennett took up the mantle, installed by Bishop Marvin C. Pryor on June 8, 2007. The story of Mount Zion Church of God in Christ is a testament to faith, resilience, and community. From its humble beginnings in a home to its current location, it stands as a beacon of hope and spiritual guidance.
