Mount Zion Church

On a crisp autumn day in 1922, a seed of faith was planted in the heart of Atlanta. This seed blossomed into Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Mount Zion Church initially lacked a physical building. Services were held in homes and under tents, fueled by a burning desire to share God’s word. The church’s first pastor, Reverend Will D. Maxon, led this dedicated group. In 1926, a significant step forward was taken. Associate Minister, Reverend Riley Anderson, spearheaded the construction of Mount Zion Church’s first building at 305 Hunter Street. This land was a generous donation from Sister Irene Brown, a founding member. The location was unique, situated on the edge of an old Decatur cemetery. Mount Zion Church thrived in this location for nearly six decades. Under the leadership of Reverend Roy Moss, Sr. from 1949-1977, Mount Zion Church experienced significant growth. He prioritized community involvement and education. He also established numerous programs, including Vacation Bible School. Rev. Moss even introduced a youth-led on-site store and Christmas savings accounts to teach financial literacy. A new chapter began in 1977 with Reverend Ulysses Buggs. He led the groundbreaking for a new church home at 2677 Pharr Road, its current location. The construction period required services to be temporarily held at the Trinity-Beacon Gymnasium. A notable event during this time was the ordination of Evangelist Mother Ruth Lindsey, the daughter of Pastor Maxon, as the first female minister at Mount Zion Church. Many pastors followed, each contributing to the rich tapestry of Mount Zion Church. Rev. Macon Gwinn expanded the music department. Rev. Kerwin B. Lee oversaw the momentous occasion of paying off the church’s mortgage. Reverend Gregory Sherman introduced new bible study divisions and youth programs. More recently, Reverend Eddie L. Bright has focused on community outreach and revitalizing existing ministries. He also established the “Feed the Homeless” ministry, a first for Mount Zion Church. From humble beginnings in tents to a thriving community hub, Mount Zion Church’s journey is a testament to the power of faith and community.
