On May 12 1892 a new chapter began. Twenty-six souls gathered forming the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. This was the birth of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Their first meeting took place at 118 1/2 South San Pedro. These dedicated individuals hailed from the Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles.

The church’s early years were marked by a spirit of unwavering faith. They moved from location to location for almost a decade. They worshipped at different addresses such as Second & Rose and Third & Stephens. Finally in 1905 they purchased a small mission on Third & Traction. This cost them $1500.00. This humble beginning would serve as a foundation for something extraordinary.

Mount Zion’s history is rich with powerful leadership. Reverend Davis R Evans served as the first pastor. His tenure lasted from October 4 1892 to February 28 1896. He and his wife were among the original members. He was a dedicated minister known for his passion and scholarly work. He passed away on March 10 1920. The old building was demolished and replaced with a larger one. The congregation grew to 1800 members. Mount Zion became a leading contributor to the Foreign Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention USA Inc. He was a highly respected preacher loved by his congregation.

The name of Reverend Edward V Hill Sr is synonymous with Mount Zion. He served as pastor for an astounding 42 years from 1961 to 2003. His leadership transformed the church. He oversaw renovations and a significant increase in membership surpassing 2000. He had a profound impact extending far beyond the church walls. He was involved in social work and community projects. He even served on the Los Angeles Planning Commission. His television ministry spread Mount Zion’s message worldwide. He was recognized as one of the fourteen greatest churches globally by Decision Magazine. Time Magazine also named him one of seven outstanding preachers.
