Gazing upon Mount Zion Baptist Church, one can almost hear the echoes of Sister Joella Lee Freeman’s vision. In 1895, she received a divine message urging her to establish a church. This church was to be built on the next street, right in the middle of the block. Mount Zion Baptist Church stands as a testament to her faith and determination. It became the first church in Logan Heights. The church’s history intertwines with San Diego’s first Black pioneers. For over a century, it has served as a vital center of spiritual, social, and economic life for the community. The story began with a prayer meeting in Sister Freeman’s home on Martin Avenue. After several meetings, seven members signed papers expressing their desire to establish a church. These papers were presented to the Mayor of San Diego and the City Council. Both willingly authorized Sister Freeman to raise funds for the church. She successfully collected funds, even receiving checks from Mayor J. Wilds and the City Council. With this money, two lots on Greely Avenue were purchased. A small dwelling on the property was repurposed for the church. Room dividers were removed and a pulpit was built. In July 1895, seven ministers from Los Angeles arrived with nine members. Together, they formally organized Mount Zion Baptist Church, with Reverend Pius serving as the first minister. Sister Freeman herself established a Missionary Society. She served as its president for many years. Reverend Pius led the church for over a year, during which the membership grew to about 25 members. Reverend McCarty briefly filled the pulpit before Reverend Langley was called. Following Reverend Langley, Reverend R.V. Green served the church for approximately six months. The church continues to thrive today. In 2024, Reverend Dennis Ray Anderson became the 13th pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church. He brought with him over 41 years of ministry experience. This legacy of faith and service, initiated by Sister Freeman’s vision, continues to resonate within the walls of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
