Have you ever wondered about the history of Mount Temple Comprehensive School? You are standing in front of a grand edifice. The school was established in 1972. It was the culmination of three schools merging to form Mount Temple. These were Mountjoy School, Royal Hibernian Marine School and Bertrand & Rutland School. The present house was originally a family home for Elizabeth Bowen. However, it had been a residence for the agent of the Earl of Charlemont. The building was built by J.C. Stronge, a magistrate, back in 1860. The Mount Temple Comprehensive School is a remarkable place and has educated some outstanding individuals, including members of the famous rock band U2, who were all former pupils of the school. Bono, the rock star, and his wife Ali Hewson are also alumni. Mount Temple is a school that has continued to be committed to gender balance. In the 1970s that approach was innovative and now continues to be a cornerstone of the school’s educational philosophy. In 2006, the school started working on a learning policy. The policy aims to provide a comprehensive education that values diversity. The school operates under the patronage of the Church of Ireland. The Mount Temple School has always been a place where people of all beliefs are welcome. Today, Mount Temple is a vibrant and thriving institution of learning.
