Once upon a time this was a private street. Now it is part of Mount St. Mary’s University Doheny Campus. The Doheny Campus offers educational opportunities. It stands in what was once the heart of old-money homes in Los Angeles.
Mount St. Mary’s University Doheny Campus began its journey in 1962. The university expanded to two campuses. It acquired 20 acres next to the University of Southern California. This land held Queen Anne style and Victorian mansions.
The property once belonged to Edward L. Doheny and Countess Estelle Doheny. They made their fortune in oil. Judge Charles Silent built the Chester Place residences at the turn of the century. The university honored the Dohenys by naming the campus after them. Countess Doheny desired privacy. She purchased all adjacent houses transforming it into a private street.
Initially the Doheny campus hosted the Associate in Arts program. Forty years later in 2002 the university introduced its first doctoral degree. It was in physical therapy. This joined other graduate programs available at the Doheny campus.
In 2006, the Weekend and Evening College program moved here from the Chalon campus. This bolstered accessibility. The Doheny Campus now hosts associate, graduate, and educational credential programs.
Buildings 1 and 2 house faculty offices. They also hold the Weekend and Evening College office. The Spiritual Development Program and the Dean of Associate Degree Programs are here too.
The Ahmanson/Weingart Hall is a classroom building renovated in 2006. It features smart technology classrooms and science laboratories. The Sr. Magdalen Coughlin Learning Complex houses the McCarthy Library. It also has the Cultural Fluency Center and the Learning Resource Center.
The Carriage House for the Mansion has been renovated. It contains a fitness center with access to the pool and tennis courts. Building 7 houses Campus Ministry and Student Activities offices.
The historic Doheny mansion houses Institutional Advancement and Public Relations Offices. Building 17 houses the Child Development Center.
Mount St. Mary’s University continues to thrive at the Doheny Campus. Its rich history blends with modern educational opportunities. The campus stands as a testament to Los Angeles’ vibrant past and academic future.
