Eleven faithful souls gathered on that second Sunday in October 1899. Their meeting in the home of Brother and Sister Allen Nelson marked the humble beginning of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. Rev Jim McCarty led the service. These eleven formed the foundation of what would become a pillar in the Houston Heights community. Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church began its journey.
The church’s early years were filled with growth and progress. Under the guidance of its first pastor Rev John Burden it outgrew the Nelson home. A harbor was built at West 8th and Waverly Streets. Later a church house was constructed near the railroad tracks on Nicholson Street. The church faced its first major challenge in 1926. A devastating fire destroyed the church building. But the congregation’s faith remained unshaken. They rebuilt the church two years later. This new structure stood on the corner of West 8th and Lawrence Streets.
Through the years Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church welcomed several pastors. Each leader guided the congregation through periods of growth and change. Rev Gabe Alfred Rev WM Jones Rev JE Jenkins Rev AL Roach and Rev WB Meyers each left their mark on the church. Rev WE Walker served from 1948 to 1964. Under his leadership the church was remodeled. His passing marked a significant moment in the church’s history.
Then came Dr Samuel Jackson Gilbert Sr. He became the eighth pastor in 1964. He’s considered a living legend. His tenure brought unprecedented progress. A new parsonage was built. The congregation moved into a new church building at 8th Street and Herkimer. Five lots were purchased for over $500000. Eleven more were developed for parking. Dr Gilbert Sr’s retirement in 2000 was historic. He was the first pastor to retire from Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church.
His son Dr Samuel J Gilbert II succeeded him. He led the church into a new era of growth and vision. A major accomplishment was the paying off of a 1.5 million dollar loan for the school and multipurpose center. This amazing achievement was celebrated with a mortgage burning ceremony in July 2012. The multipurpose center was named in honor of Dr Gilbert Sr. It’s called The Dr SJ Gilbert Sr Family Life Center.
Today Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church continues to thrive. It boasts over 25 ministries and a vibrant staff of committed leaders. Under Dr Gilbert II’s leadership it’s a traditional bible-believing church with a contemporary feel. The church stands as a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of its members. It’s a true pillar of the Houston Heights community. A vibrant community of faith that continues to grow and serve its community. Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church continues to answer the call of God. It serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration to all who enter its doors. The legacy of faith and service continues.
