Can a church have multiple homes? Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church certainly did. This church has a history of moving and growing. It’s a testament to its enduring spirit. Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church started humbly in 1942. Rev. D.S. Richardson founded it in a small building on South Western Avenue. This Los Angeles church quickly outgrew its first home. By 1948, a new leader emerged. Rev. H.B. Charles Sr. guided the growing congregation. They moved to South LaSalle Street in 1952. Later moves brought them to West Adams Boulevard in 1964 and South Gramercy Place in 1968. Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church thrived under Rev. Charles Sr. for 41 years. Many ministers blossomed under his guidance. Names like Rev. Frederick Price and Rev. H.B. Charles Jr. are among those who answered the call to preach. After Rev. Charles Sr.’s passing in 1989, his son, Rev. H.B. Charles Jr., took the helm in 1990. The church faced challenges in 1994. A four-year period of difficulty tested the congregation. Rev. Charles Jr. and his pastoral team persevered. This team included pastors like George Hurtt. They led Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church through the storm. The church needed a larger space yet again. Through prayer and generosity, they found a new location on West 54th Street. In 2008, Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church celebrated its move. They first used the Fellowship Hall. Shortly after, they moved into the renovated main sanctuary. The new property was expansive. It included a parking lot, apartments, an administration building, and later, a residential and commercial property. Rev. Charles Jr. soon accepted a call to lead another church in Florida. In 2008, Pastor George Hurtt became the new Senior Pastor-Teacher of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Hurtt continued the tradition of strong leadership. He focused on powerful preaching. He also introduced new programs. These programs aimed to nurture the congregation. They also reached out to the community. Under his leadership, Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church expanded its reach. They added weekend services. They also created “Mt. Sinai North,” a short-term location to connect with more people. Their outreach initiatives multiplied. They started programs like the Galatians 6:10 Foundation. They emphasized missions and community support. From humble beginnings to its current home, Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church embodies perseverance and growth. It’s a place where faith has taken root and flourished. It continues to touch lives in Los Angeles.
