Their prayers were answered. It was 1899 when five devoted families near Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church sought a place to worship in the East Austin community. Gathering first in homes, their faith led them to Poquito and 22nd Streets. Here, in 1901, the “Main East Austin Baptist Church” was built. Through the decades, Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church thrived under the leadership of various pastors, each leaving their mark. The church was rebuilt in 1958. That same year, under the guidance of Reverend L.V. Ates, the name “Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church” was adopted. The church continued to grow, necessitating a move to a larger space on East 38th 1/2 Street in 1989. This move was commemorated with a parade led by the Mount Sinai Christian Drill Team, a testament to the church’s vibrant spirit. Under the leadership of Reverend A.W. Anthony Mays, who became pastor in 1986, Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church adopted a “Faith Ministry” and embraced the theme “Ministries for Mankind.” Their commitment to serving both the congregation and the wider community led them to their current location on Cameron Road.
