Founded in 1942 Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history. It began modestly at 2700 South Western Avenue. Rev DS Richardson established this spiritual home. Six years later Rev HB Charles Sr took the helm. Under his guidance Mount Sinai thrived. The church relocated several times reflecting its growth. These moves were to 2610 South LaSalle Street in 1952 then 3200 West Adams Boulevard in 1964. Finally in 1968 it found a home at 1800 South Gramercy Place.

Pastor Charles Sr’s 41-year tenure shaped countless lives. Many ministers emerged from Mount Sinai under his mentorship. Their names echo through the church’s history Rev JG Williams Rev Freeman Rev John Gaines and many more. These individuals carried the gospel far and wide. They built upon the foundation laid by their predecessor.

In 1989 a transition occurred. Dr Charles Sr passed away. The congregation remained strong. A new chapter began on November 5 1990 with Rev HB Charles Jr’s installation. Under his leadership the church continued to flourish. He guided them through a challenging four-year period. This involved strengthening the pastoral team. This team included Pastors Charles Charthern George Hurtt Phillip Placenti John Scroggins and Anthony Thompson. They worked together during hard times.

Growth necessitated another move. On February 29 2008 Mount Sinai acquired a new building. It is located at 3669 W 54th Street. The dedication was on June 1 2008. This move was a pivotal moment in the church’s ongoing story.

Pastor Charles Jr then moved to Jacksonville Florida. He became pastor of Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church. Pastor George E Hurtt one of the associated pastors succeeded him. He was installed on December 14 2008. He built upon the legacy of his predecessors. Pastor Hurtt expanded the ministry’s reach. He added new programs including outreach initiatives. Mount Sinai also created the Galatians 6:10 Foundation. This foundation helped support those in need.

The church even partnered with Food for the Hungry. This was for Haitian relief after the 2010 earthquake. Mount Sinai continues to be a beacon of hope and faith. It is a vibrant testament to unwavering commitment to God’s work. Its story is one of resilience growth and unwavering dedication to serving its community.
