Of course Mount Moriah Baptist Church played a pivotal role in shaping the life and career of gospel legend Mahalia Jackson. Mount Moriah Baptist Church was more than just a religious institution for Mahalia Jackson. It was the center of her social life. It was the place where she found spiritual guidance. Music was also at its heart.

Jackson’s connection to Mount Moriah Baptist Church started in her childhood. Her grandfather, Paul Clark, preached there beginning in the 1910s. The church was conveniently located just blocks from her childhood home. Although christened at Plymouth Rock Baptist Church, she found her place at Mount Moriah early on. She quickly became a standout member of the youth choir at Mount Moriah Baptist Church.

Raised by her Aunt Duke after her mother’s death, young Mahalia’s life was quite restricted. Church, school and work were the only places she was allowed to go. The family’s poverty meant she even had to leave school to support herself. She sometimes attended services barefoot. However, Mount Moriah Baptist Church offered more than just religious services. Its community center hosted fish fries, movie screenings, and gatherings where secular music was allowed. Here, Mahalia captivated her peers with Bessie Smith hits.

At 14, Jackson was baptized in the river shallows. She became a full member of Mount Moriah. She then joined the adult choir. She preferred the lively congregational singing to the formal choir anthems. She found joy in the foot-tapping and hand-clapping.

The “Dr. Watts” style of singing at Mount Moriah influenced Jackson’s unique vocal style. She drew out vocal lines slowly. She added improvised embellishments. The rhythmic “bounce” of Mount Moriah became her signature style. She brought this emotive style to Chicago. She moved there either in 1927 or 1931. From there, her career soared. She went from local churches to international fame.

Even as an international celebrity, Jackson never forgot her roots. She arranged a live national television broadcast from Mount Moriah in 1956. She sang with her old choir. The director asked for decorum. But the spirit was too high.

Jackson’s upbringing at Mount Moriah remained a guiding force throughout her life. She saw singing as a devotional act. She declined lucrative offers to sing secular music. Her performances were extensions of her faith. She aimed to inspire, not just entertain.

She worked closely with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She became a key figure in the civil rights movement. In 1967, Rev. Dr. Simmie Lee Harvey, a civil rights activist, became a pastor at Mount Moriah. This strengthened the church’s connection to Jackson’s work.

When Jackson died in 1972, Harvey officiated her funeral. The procession passed by Mount Moriah. Her records played on loudspeakers filled the street with her music. For years, the church held an annual parade in the Black Pearl neighborhood. The parade reminded people of Mahalia’s early inspirations.

While the parade has diminished, Mount Moriah Baptist Church remains active today. Mount Moriah Baptist Church stands as a testament to Mahalia Jackson’s enduring influence. It is a place where faith, music, and community intertwine.
