Taoism’s birthplace now rests before us. Mount Qingcheng stands serene. It is a place where ancient beliefs intertwine with lush landscapes. Are you ready to explore this cradle of Taoist culture?

Mount Qingcheng is located in Dujiangyan City. It is about 68 kilometers east of Chengdu. This mountain is one of China’s four famous Taoist mountains. In 2000, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name “Qingcheng” means “mountain of green”. Evergreen forests cover the entire mountain.

Let’s step back to 143 AD. Imagine walking here. You would see people seeking health and immortality. Zhang Daoling, a wise leader and founder of Taoism, believed Mount Qingcheng’s tranquility was perfect for his religion’s development.

From here, Taoism spread across China. It reached its peak in the next 600 years. The core concepts of yin and yang even integrated into daily Chinese life. Taoism values “Dao”. It is like the fundamental laws of nature. Taoists believe everything comes from the Dao. Taoist practices involve alchemy and talismans. Priests mixed minerals and herbs to create elixirs. They were China’s earliest chemists. Talismans with symbols warded off evil spirits.

We will explore Mount Qingcheng’s top attractions.

First, the Jianfu Palace. Built in 724 AD during the Tang Dynasty, its name means “to build happiness”. It blesses the people. Traditional Taoist temples here are made of wood. They have green tile roofs. The temple has two courtyards and three halls built into the mountainside. Sometimes, Taoist priests perform rituals here.

Next, the Shangqing Palace. It sits at 1180 meters. “Shangqing” means the dwelling place of a Taoist deity. It feels like a celestial realm for spiritual growth. Dating back to the 3rd century AD, it houses deities and stone carvings. Ancient gingko trees flank the stone steps.

Finally, the Tianshi Cave. Zhang Daoling meditated here. It was built in the 6th century AD. Legend says Zhang Daoling ascended to immortality here. Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty inscribed a plaque in the 17th century. A statue of Zhang Daoling stands here. Explore the inscriptions and murals within the cave. Don’t miss the 1900-year-old ginkgo tree. It has witnessed centuries of change.

At the peak of Mount Qingcheng, the Laojun Pavilion stands. It overlooks the 36 Peaks of Qingcheng Mountain. Actually, there are 18 peaks. From the front, you see 18 shaded peaks. From the back, 18 sunlit peaks. The highest peak is Lao Xiao Ding at 1260 meters. The Laojun Pavilion is the highest Taoist temple here. It is a nine-story building. It symbolizes heaven’s movement within stillness. Inside, a sculpture of Laozi resides. He was a Chinese philosopher from the 7th century BC.

Mount Qingcheng also offers Tai Chi. In 2021, Qingcheng Kung Fu was listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Taoists used martial arts to cultivate their bodies. Taijiquan embodies the interplay between yin and yang. Gentle yet powerful movements stretch the body. They reduce stress.

There is also Qingcheng Back Mountain. It is more primitive than the front. It offers scenic views and natural waterways. Historically, Taoists came here for spiritual cultivation. Feiqian Gorge and Wulong Gorge are highlights.

Mount Qingcheng offers a journey into Taoism. The front mountain helps you seek the Dao. As you ascend, you yearn for tranquility amidst the crowds. As you descend, you gain inner peace to face each day. It is akin to yin and yang.

To ascend the front mountain, take a boat and then a cable car.

Mount Qingcheng’s blend of natural beauty and Taoist culture provides a unique experience. As we leave, remember the tranquility and wisdom found here. May it inspire you to seek your own path to inner peace.
