Founded in 1925 Mount Pream Baptist Church wasn’t always the magnificent structure we see today. John and Alice Pouncy along with Bro and Sis Moses Watkins Bro E Garrett and Bro Eddie Bush established the church. Initially services were held under a simple brush arbor. This humble beginning speaks volumes about the unwavering faith of its founders.
Imagine the dedication it took to worship under the open sky through changing weather conditions. From 1925 to 1929 Pastor Rev S H Saul and then Pastor Rev A J Inman led the congregation. Their leadership guided the early growth of Mount Pream Baptist Church.
The first two wooden structures were built in 1930 under Pastor Rev J E Jenkins’ leadership. Pastor Jenkins’ role as the second moderator of the IMBGA Independent Missionary Baptist General Association of Texas further elevated the church’s standing. The church continued to grow. In 1954 Pastor Rev Travis E Spiller and his wife Sis Sarah L Spiller established the church’s first Youth Department. This department became a model for Houston and the state.
Between 1968 and 1975 Pastor Rev Abraham Campbell and Pastor Rev Melvin Wade oversaw significant interior and exterior renovations. They also purchased land across the street for parking. This demonstrates the church’s increasing size and influence within the community. Pastor Rev G T Curry Sr led Mount Pream Baptist Church from 1976 until present day. He served as the Emeritus Pastor for 46 years. During his tenure the multi-purpose building and educational building were added. These additions completed the beloved trinity complex. The church’s growth is a testament to the enduring spirit of its community.
The church’s commitment extends beyond its walls. It has various programs serving members and the wider community. These programs have guided countless people to Christ. They include Men in Action United Women’s Ministry Sunday School and a Scouting Program established in 1960. The scouting program is noteworthy. It produced a record number of Eagle Scouts. This is largely due to the leadership of Bro Calvin G Dunn and Dea Heard Robinson Jr. Today Mount Pream Baptist Church covers 15 acres on E 32nd 1/2 St and Link St in the historic Independent Heights Community. It continues its service in person and virtually through Sunday worship and various activities throughout the year. It’s a beacon of faith and community spirit a testament to the enduring legacy of its founders and the devotion of its members. The church continues to thrive a symbol of hope and community resilience.
