What began as a humble gathering has grown into a pillar of faith. We are standing before Mount Pleasant Church. Its story is one of resilience and deep community roots.
Mount Pleasant Church’s origins trace back to 1876. A small group of seven individuals founded it. They sought a place of worship closer to home. This group included Rev. George W. Booker and his wife Lizzie. Abe and Patsy Gray were also among the founders. As were Nathan and Susan Ann Johnson plus Sarah Scott.
These seven pioneers purchased a lot on Liberty Street. It is now known as Rothwell Street. There, they built a simple brush arbor. This served as their first place of worship.
The early days of Mount Pleasant Church were marked by hardship. Storms and fire destroyed their sanctuaries repeatedly. Yet, each time, the members persevered. They salvaged materials and rebuilt. Their spirit remained unbroken.
Rev. George W. Booker led the church from 1876 to 1908. He laid a strong foundation for future growth. Rev. Joe J. James followed him. During his tenure, the Women’s Missionary Society became an integral part of the church leadership.
In the 1940s, progress brought a challenge. The City of Houston acquired the church’s land for highway construction. Mount Pleasant Church purchased land at Hershe and Solo Streets. They secured it from the Clay and Clay funeral directors. Construction of a new sanctuary began.
In October 1951, the congregation entered their new building. They celebrated paying off the church mortgage in August 1956. It was a testament to their collective dedication.
Mount Pleasant Church has had only six pastors in its long history. Rev. Howard O. Scott served from 1932 to 1959. Rev. Acy D. McCraw then led the church from 1959 to 2000. Rev. Roy L. Jackson followed from 2000 to 2020. Rev. Dr. Nico S. Mathews assumed the role in 2021. Each pastor has contributed to the church’s growth.
In its 145 years, Mount Pleasant has expanded. It has enhanced its facilities. The church received the Official State of Texas Historical Marker. This recognizes its historical importance.
Mount Pleasant Church continues to play a vital role in the community. It is committed to missionary work both locally and abroad. The church aims to bring more people to Christianity.
