Mount Pleasant Baptist Church has been a cornerstone of the Fifth Ward community since its founding in 1876. Imagine a small group of just seven people, led by Reverend George W. Booker, coming together with a shared dream. They gathered in a simple “brush arbor” on land they purchased on Rothwell Street. These founding members, the very heart and soul of early Houston, laid the foundation for what Mount Pleasant Baptist Church is today. Their journey wasn’t easy. The church, a symbol of their unwavering faith, faced numerous setbacks over the years. Storms and even a devastating fire could not extinguish the spirit of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Each time disaster struck, the resilient members rebuilt, salvaged materials, and started anew. In 1949, a new chapter began. The church, ever-growing, relocated to the corner of Hershe and Solo Streets. A beacon of hope and resilience, the present sanctuary opened its doors in 1951. Today, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. As you stand here, imagine the generations that have passed through these doors.
