A grand celebration unfolded at Mount Olive Church of God in Christ. It was their 96th anniversary. The year was 2019. Mount Olive Church of God in Christ, a cornerstone of the Los Angeles community, was buzzing with excitement. The sanctuary at 1385 East 21st Street was filled with music and joyous celebration. Bishop Frank and Lady Sandra Stewart, leaders of Zoe Christian Fellowship, graced the occasion as special guests. Their presence added to the significance of the day, especially given Bishop Stewart’s early connection to Mount Olive Church of God in Christ. He had served as assistant pastor under his uncle, the late Bishop E.B. Stewart. The elder Stewart held a prominent position. He was the first bishop appointed by COGIC founder, Bishop Charles Harrison Mason, to oversee COGIC churches in Northern California. The legacy of leadership at Mount Olive Church of God in Christ resonated deeply with the congregation. The church’s history stretched back to 1923. It began humbly, as a prayer meeting in a house, led by Elder Johnny Robins. Later, Bishop E.B. Stewart guided the church from 1931 to 1969. Superintendent J.C. Brewster then took the helm, serving for the next 30 years. The 96th-anniversary celebration was a testament to the enduring spirit of Mount Olive Church of God in Christ. The vibrant music of the PMO choir, Cynthia Mizell, the Stewart Family and Friends Singers, Elder Gregory Farrell and the Farrell Family, and gospel saxophonist Peter Everett filled the air. The event was a homecoming, a time for past members and friends to reconnect and celebrate the church’s rich history. It served as a poignant reminder of Mount Olive Church of God in Christ’s unwavering commitment to its community and faith.
