Whispers of ancient prayers seem to rise from the stones beneath our feet here at the Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery. This is no ordinary burial ground. This is a sacred landscape holding millennia of Jewish history.

For over 3000 years Jews have been buried on these slopes. The Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery holds approximately 150000 graves. It is the oldest and most important Jewish cemetery in Jerusalem.

Imagine generations seeking their final resting place here. They believe the resurrection of the dead will begin here when the Messiah arrives. Jewish writings support this belief. The risen dead will then cross Kidron Valley to Temple Mount.

Some believe there were also practical reasons for choosing this location. East of the city the wind would carry the smell of death away. The Mount of Olives was not suitable for building or cultivation. Its soft rock made digging graves relatively easy.

Look around you at the sea of tombstones. Many prominent figures rest here. Biblical figures statesmen creators and religious leaders are buried on this sacred ground.

Here lies Menachem Begin. He was an Israeli Prime Minister. Eliezer Ben-Yehuda rests here too. He is the father of modern Hebrew. Prominent rabbis also chose this as their final resting place. Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook rests here. He was a Zionist and Chief Rabbi of Palestine.

You will also find Judah HeHasid here. He led a large group of Jewish immigrants to the Holy Land in the 17th century. S.Y. Agnon is also buried here. He was a famed Hebrew fiction author and Nobel Prize laureate. Even Christian royalty found their place in this cemetery. Princess Alice of Battenberg is buried here. She was the mother of Prince Philip.

Sadly the Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery has faced challenges. During Jordanian rule many tombstones were damaged. Some were even used for military purposes. Despite these difficult times restoration work has been carried out.

Today the Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery remains a place of pilgrimage and remembrance. Space is running out and burial plots cost upwards of 30000 dollars. Yet the desire to be buried here remains strong.

As we conclude our visit remember the Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery is more than just a cemetery. It is a testament to faith history and the enduring connection of the Jewish people to Jerusalem. Its silent stones tell stories of hope resilience and the promise of resurrection.
