Mount Nebo Church was founded in 1923 by a small group of believers led by Reverend J.D. Davis. Their first service, held on April 12, 1924, marked the beginning of a journey filled with both challenges and triumphs. The church quickly outgrew its original structure. A new building was erected on Tupelo Street in 1931. But the congregation’s commitment to service extended far beyond its walls. Mount Nebo Church played an active role during the Civil Rights Movement. In 1964, it became a haven for education and activism, hosting one of Mississippi’s Freedom Schools. These schools sought to address educational inequality and empower Black communities. The church also provided a platform for political candidates to engage with the community. The spirit of resilience continued in 1994 when a fire ravaged a part of the sanctuary. Undeterred, the congregation rebuilt and rededicated their sacred space.
