Isn’t it remarkable how a seed of faith can blossom into a vibrant community like Mount Moriah Baptist Church? Established in April 1980, Mount Moriah began humbly. Pastor Albert George Simmons led the first services in Brother and Sister Johnnie Sales’ home. The congregation lacked a dedicated worship space. Imagine weekly dinner sales fueling their dream of a permanent church home.

For a time, the Greater Christian Hope Baptist Church offered their cafeteria. Pastor Wess Owens showed great generosity. The Mount Moriah family worked tirelessly. They raised funds with unwavering dedication. Pastor Simmons then secured a rental property at 3502 Chenevert. Mount Moriah flourished there under his leadership. The church experienced significant growth. Even building maintenance challenges couldn’t dampen their spirits.

But divine providence wasn’t finished. Mount Moriah relocated to 3413 Elgin. This is where the church stands today. The congregation resolved to own the property outright. They achieved this goal through faith and hard work. Now positioned in Houston’s Third Ward, Mount Moriah serves its community.

Pastor Simmons’ vision guides them still. That vision is to illuminate, effect change, and nurture disciples. It is a beacon of hope.

In 2020, Min. G. R. Wilson became pastor. He succeeded Pastor Emeritus A.G. Simmons. Pastor Wilson continues to lead with a servant’s heart. He emphasizes being a light and making a difference. He also focuses on making disciples of Christ.

Before Pastor Wilson, Pastor Albert George Simmons shaped Mount Moriah. Born in 1935, he was deeply rooted in faith. In 1966, a divine revelation changed his life. God told him to “Go tell my people I love them”. He answered the call. He founded Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church.

Today, Mount Moriah is a vibrant church. It is empowered by the Holy Spirit. The mission is clear. They spread Christ’s message. They serve the congregation, the community, and the world. They welcome worshippers of all ages and backgrounds.

Mount Moriah offers Sunday School and worship services. These deepen the connection to God. They provide a path to vibrant faith. The church is dedicated to serving Houston. It is truly a place where faith and community intertwine. Stop by and feel the spirit. You might just find your spiritual home.
