“Once a Matador, always a Matador” is a saying you might hear echoing through these halls. Mount Miguel High School opened its doors in 1957. It stands as the fourth high school in the Grossmont Union High School District. This public school serves over 1,400 students from ninth to twelfth grade.
Mount Miguel High School’s story began with a vision. The vision was to create a comprehensive educational environment for the growing community of Spring Valley. Over the years, it has become an integral part of the community. It has shaped the lives of countless students.
The school’s mascot is the Matador. The school colors are red and black. These symbols represent the spirit and pride of Mount Miguel High School.
Mount Miguel High School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. It earned the title of California Distinguished School in 1990. This recognition underscores its commitment to academic excellence.
One unique program is the Matador Early College. Students can enroll in UC and CSU transferable college courses. These courses take place at Grossmont College or Cuyamaca College. This experience allows students to get a feel for a college environment. They learn how to enroll in college and choose classes.
Another interesting program is Matador Mechanics. This Engineering and Robotics program lets students participate in the FIRST Robotics FIRST Tech Challenge. They gain hands-on experience and learn about programming. They also develop mechanics expertise and logistical design skills.
Advancement Via Individual Determination also known as AVID is another key program. This college prep elective course ensures students meet all A-G requirements. AVID prepares them for college by the end of their senior year. Impressively, 100% of AVID seniors in 2015 were accepted into a four-year university. MMHS AVID seniors are awarded over $250000 annually in grants and scholarships. Paid college tutors provide academic support.
Mount Miguel High School offers a wide variety of clubs and activities. Students can participate in academic enrichment programs. Student support is also available.
After-school programs include Driver’s Education, Baseball Club, and Softball Club. Matadors United and Engineering & Robotics are also available.
The Matadors compete in the Grossmont Conference. They also participate in the California Interscholastic Federation San Diego Section. The school fields teams in various sports. These include baseball, basketball, cross country, and football. Other sports include soccer, softball, swimming, diving, track and field, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.
Several notable alumni have walked these halls. Ryan Anthony a classical trumpet player graduated in 1987. Khalif Barnes an NFL offensive tackle graduated in 2000. Robert Griffith played strong safety for the Arizona Cardinals. Jeff Karstens a starting pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates also attended Mount Miguel. “Shotgun Tom” Kelly a television personality graduated in 1968. Laulauga Tausaga a World Champion discus thrower graduated in 2016.
