Beneath the quiet solemnity of Mount Judah Cemetery lies a tapestry of stories. These stories speak of lives lived, legacies left, and the enduring spirit of a community. Mount Judah Cemetery, incorporated in 1908 as Highland View Cemetery Corporation, stands as a testament to time and memory. It took four years to prepare the grounds and build the roads before the first burial took place on March 8, 1912. Since then, approximately 54,000 individuals have found their final resting place here. Located on the border of Brooklyn and Queens, accessible from Exit 2 off the Jackie Robinson Parkway, Mount Judah Cemetery spans 37 acres. The majority of the cemetery, including the office building, lies south of Cypress Avenue, with the remainder on the north side. Mount Judah Cemetery serves the Jewish community, operating under New York State’s Not-For-Profit Corporation Laws. Within its grounds, around 295 different benevolent societies, family circles, and congregations have designated areas. There are also private family plots and individually owned graves, each marking a unique life story. Among the notable figures interred at Mount Judah Cemetery are Lazar Rabinowitz, Abraham Pam, Jacob Kamenecki, and prominent rabbis like Joseph Soloveitchik, Simchah Soloveitchik, and Moses Soloveitchik. Solomon Heyman, Frieda (Miriam) Kagan, and Andrew Goodman, a civil rights activist, also rest here. Mount Judah Cemetery is not just a place of mourning. It’s a place where history whispers through the stones. It’s a place where the lives of gangsters and activists, rabbis and everyday people, converge in the quiet embrace of eternity. The meticulous maintenance of the grounds reflects the respect and dignity afforded to those who rest here. Mount Judah Cemetery offers a tranquil space for reflection, a poignant reminder of the lives that shaped the community, and a testament to the enduring power of memory.
