On June 21 1896 a small group of believers left First Shiloh Baptist Church. They formed Mount Hermon Baptist Church. This is where we stand today. Mount Hermon Baptist Church wasn’t just a building. It was a testament to faith perseverance and community. Initially they worshipped in a rented building. Later they purchased land at 2333 Perdido Street. There they built a wooden structure. Sadly a fire destroyed it in 1917. Undeterred the congregation built a new stone structure. This was achieved without incurring any debt. The church’s history is filled with dedicated pastors. Reverend Arthur Paul Orlage served from 1896 to 1917. He laid the foundation for the church’s growth. Brother William Tyler followed him. He served from 1920 until 1948. Under his leadership a church center was built. Reverend Thomas Franklin Reed served as pastor from 1949 to 1967. He initiated a scholarship program for the youth. Reverend Ellis Dupleche Sr continued the legacy from 1968 to 2000. He oversaw the move to the current location at 2153 North Broad Street. The present pastor Reverend John Jackson was elected in 2000. He has added various ministries. These include a Children’s Church Ministry a Dance Team and a Drama Ministry. Mount Hermon Baptist Church endured even Hurricane Katrina. The church reopened its doors for worship on August 13 2006. This shows the enduring spirit of this Savannah institution. The church continues to thrive serving its community. It remains a vital part of Savannah’s rich history. It’s a place of faith hope and community. Mount Hermon Baptist Church stands as a beacon. It stands for resilience and the unwavering spirit of its people.
