Question: Ever wondered how a disagreement can lead to the birth of a new church? That’s precisely the story of Mount Herman Reformed Methodist Union Episcopal Church.

Mount Herman Reformed Methodist Union Episcopal Church stands as a testament to faith and resolve. Its origins trace back to a schism within the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The split arose from a dispute over the election of ministerial delegates. This led a group of ministers to withdraw and form their own church.

In January 1885 these ministers gathered for a four-day meeting in Charleston. They organized the Reformed Methodist Union church at Hills Chapel. Hills Chapel is now known as Mount Herman Reformed Methodist Union Episcopal Church. The Reverend William E. Johnson was elected as the church’s first president.

Following Rev. Johnson’s death in 1896 a significant decision was made. The church chose to align with regular American Methodism embracing the Episcopacy. Edward Russell Middleton became the first Bishop. With this change they added Episcopal to the church’s name. Bishop Middleton’s consecration occurred on December 5 1896. Bishop P. F. Stephens of the Reformed Episcopal Church performed the ceremony.

The Reformed Methodist Union Episcopal Church holds Methodist theology doctrine and practice dear. It observes love feasts and class meetings. A century after its founding the church had eighteen congregations. It also had twenty-six clergy and 3800 members.

The church is headquartered right here in Charleston. It publishes The Doctrines and Discipline. In its early years the Reformed party sought a more congregationally based governance style. They wanted a less episcopal structure.

Mount Herman Reformed Methodist Union Episcopal Church has seen fluctuations in membership over the years. In 1965 the church reported over 16000 members. By 1983 the number stood at 3800. These numbers reflect the changing dynamics within religious organizations.

Consider the dedication of those early leaders who shaped this church. Think about their commitment to their beliefs. Mount Herman Reformed Methodist Union Episcopal Church stands as a symbol of resilience. It is a testament to the power of faith. It reminds us that even disagreements can pave the way for new beginnings.
