“Can you imagine building a church with your bare hands?” whispered a congregant to her friend, their eyes wide with awe as they stood before Mount Gilead Church. Mount Gilead Church has a history as sturdy as the bricks that now form its walls. Founded in 1830 as a humble Primitive Baptist Church, its early days were marked by gatherings in the homes of its devoted members. It wasn’t until 1841 that they became Mount Gilead Christian Church, finally erecting their first building in 1844. Tragically, this labor of love was destroyed by fire in 1862. Undeterred, the congregation rallied, and in 1873, a new Mount Gilead Church rose from the ashes. This time, they used bricks they made themselves and fashioned pews from trees on the property, a testament to their resilience and deep-rooted faith. The spirit of those early members lives on.
