What brought those first twenty souls together at Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church? We stand before Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church, a testament to faith and community in Los Angeles. It began humbly in 1894 with prayer meetings led by Deacon Louis Whitfield, held in homes across the community. These gatherings, fueled by devotion, blossomed into a congregation of twenty faithful members. They sought a more permanent home, finding it in a commissary store across the railroad tracks, after the death of Deacon Whitfield. Led by Reverend George Odom, then Reverend Jacob Barnes, the first ordained minister, they built their first church. This original Mount Gilead, located on what is now Clements Street, featured an outdoor baptismal pool where many members were baptized. In 1926, the congregation decided to move, relocating the church building to its current location at the corner of Kennedy and Elm Avenue. The vision of Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church is to impact and renew Los Angeles with the message of Jesus Christ. It strives to be a welcoming community, prioritizing Biblical teachings and following Jesus’ example. This church is a place to believe, belong, and become, inviting everyone to join their life-changing Christian journey.
