“Volunteering opportunities abound” echoes in your mind. This brings us to Mount Florida Community Garden. It is more than just a garden. It is a testament to community spirit and the power of green spaces.

Mount Florida Community Garden is part of a larger movement. This movement seeks to cultivate community bonds through gardening. The Good to Grow Map highlights this. It showcases gardens where people can volunteer. Jon Ross from Sow the City in Manchester has emphasized its importance. According to him, the Map is the best way to recruit new volunteers.

But the story of community in Mount Florida goes even deeper. It involves a local bowling club. The Mount Florida bowling club closed in 2019. Falling membership numbers forced its closure. Developers then planned to build flats on the site. However, the Mount Florida Community Trust stepped in. They aimed to retain the site for community benefit.

The Trust proposed maintaining the bowling green. Also, they wanted to create a new community leisure facility. This would include a tennis court, a fitness area, and a community garden. The existing clubhouse would be retained. It would be used for community activities. The bar would be kept for functions.

Over 600 objections were submitted against the flats. Local councillors and the Mount Florida Community Council were among them. Concerns included loss of privacy and increased traffic. On the other hand, 163 letters of support were submitted for the community retention plans. Councillor Susan Aitken was one of them.

NOAH Developments owns the Mount Florida Bowling Club site. They offered the community a unique opportunity. The offer was outright ownership of the community space. This includes a landscaped open space and an upgraded clubhouse. Alternatively, they offered a landscaped open space with a financial donation. The Mount Florida Community Trust was chosen to receive this gift. This allows them to shape the space to best serve the community.

Paul Winocour of NOAH Developments recognized the challenges faced by community groups. He hoped that ownership would assist in creating a sustainable community asset. The Mount Florida Community Garden stands as a symbol of community resilience. It shows what can be achieved when people come together. It transforms spaces into vibrant hubs of activity and growth. Here, the Mount Florida community blossoms.
