Initially, Brisbane’s water supply was a far cry from the clear water we enjoy today. Water was sourced from a reservoir in Tank Street. It was delivered by carts and often described as having the consistency and color of pea soup. Can you imagine adding wood ash to your drinking water to make it palatable? The establishment of the Brisbane Municipal Council in 1859 marked the beginning of change. They soon recognized the need for a better water supply.
The Mount Crosby Pumping Station’s history is intertwined with innovation and adaptation. Originally steam-powered, a tramway delivered coal to fuel the boilers. This tramway wasn’t just for show.
