Haven’t you heard that Mount Coot-tha is more than just a mountain? It is also a suburb of Brisbane. Mount Coot-tha is visible from much of the city. It beckons with bushland, a lookout, and so much more.

We are about to explore Mount Coot-tha Track Walks. These trails offer a unique way to experience this iconic Brisbane landmark. Mount Coot-tha has a rich history. Before European settlement, the Yugara Aboriginal people called this place home. They came here to collect “ku-ta”. This is the Yugarabul word for honey from native stingless bees.

In 1839, surveyor James Warner cleared the mountain’s summit. He left only one large eucalypt tree. This tree became a trigonometric station for surveying. For this reason, people called the mountain One Tree Hill. In 1873, the forests became a timber reserve. Timber was needed for Queensland’s growing railway network.

The name changed to Mount Coot-tha in 1883. Henry Wyatt Radford suggested the name. He was the Clerk of the Queensland Legislative Council. Radford consulted Kerwalli, a local Aboriginal foreman. Mount Coot-tha is believed to mean honey in an Aboriginal language. But Archibald Meston claimed that Coot-tha translated to something obscene.

During World War II, Mount Coot-tha became a military base. It served as an explosives depot. Anti-aircraft guns and searchlights guarded the lookout. The US Navy also used it as an ammunition depot.

Today, Mount Coot-tha offers diverse experiences. Sir Samuel Griffith Scenic Drive loops around the mountain. It provides access to the lookout, picnic areas, and those walking tracks. One track even leads to The Pinnacle.

Mount Coot-tha isn’t actually the highest point in Brisbane. But its lookout offers unmatched views. Constitution Hill and The Summit are higher peaks on the mountain. However, they lack the unobscured views.

The Brisbane Botanic Gardens lie at the base of Mount Coot-tha. Nearby, you will find the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium. Also close by is the Mount Coot-tha Library. This library specializes in botany and horticulture.

The Mount Coot-tha Quarry operates between the gardens and the mountain. It provides materials for Brisbane’s roads. The quarry extracts metamorphic rock. This rock is durable and used in asphalt.

Mount Coot-tha Forest boasts over 1,500 hectares of natural bushland. It shares a border with Brisbane Forest Park. This adds another 25,000 hectares.

The mountain bike trails at Mount Coot-tha cater to all skill levels. Multi-use trails are shared by hikers and horses. Orienteering events are also held here each year.

Brisbane Transport Bus 471 can bring you to Mount Coot-tha. Parking is limited at the lookout. Consider a taxi or Uber as other options.

The Mount Coot-tha Track Walks offer something for everyone. Whether you seek panoramic views, natural beauty, or a touch of history, Mount Coot-tha has it all. Take a deep breath and let the spirit of this mountain invigorate you. Enjoy your walk.
