The Church of Our Lady of the Scapular of Mount Carmel. This church wasn’t just any church. It was the first Carmelite church in the United States. Established in 1889 by Carmelite Fathers from Ireland. The church was built on East 28th Street. The church stood tall for over a century. A beautiful Gothic Revival style building. But times change. In 1991 the church was demolished. A 16-story apartment building replaced it. The church was more than bricks and mortar. It was a community hub. A place of worship for many years. It housed a boys school run by the Brothers of the Christian Schools. It also had a girls school staffed by the Sisters of Mercy. The Carmelites served at the nearby Bellevue Hospital for 118 years.
