This sprawling sanctuary, nestled amidst over 40 acres of serene wooded land, has a story that intertwines the destinies of two congregations. Mount Carmel Church wasn’t always a Mar Thoma church. It was born as Mount Carmel Christian Church in 1917. The congregation thrived and built a larger church in 1990. However, over time, they faced dwindling membership. In a twist of fate, the burgeoning Mar Thoma community in Atlanta sought a larger space. They had outgrown their own facilities and dreamed of a spiritual home. This is where their stories beautifully converged.
When the Mount Carmel Christian Church decided to downsize and sell their property, it presented a unique opportunity. The Mar Thoma community, under the guidance of their Diocesan Episcopa, Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos, saw a chance for a groundbreaking solution: a merger. In an unprecedented move, the Atlanta Mar Thoma Church and the Atlanta Hermon Mar Thoma Church united to acquire the Mount Carmel Christian Church property. This joint venture with the Diocese of North America and Europe marked a new chapter in the history of the Mar Thoma Church.
They say great things don’t come easy, and the acquisition of Mount Carmel Church was no exception. The community faced a daunting financial hurdle. However, their faith was strong. Through dedicated fundraising efforts, generous contributions from parishioners, and unwavering support from the Diocese, they achieved their goal. The Mount Carmel Christian Church, recognizing the shared values and missionary spirit, saw the Mar Thoma Church as the perfect custodians of the space.
On September 24, 2018, a new chapter began as the property officially transitioned to the Diocese’s ownership. In a remarkable display of compassion, the Mar Thoma Church allowed the Mount Carmel Christian Church to continue their worship until they found a new home. The name board remained untouched, a testament to the respect and unity fostered during the transition. Finally, on December 29, 2018, a dream was realized. The Atlanta Mar Thoma Church and the Atlanta Hermon Mar Thoma Church merged into this magnificent space. Mount Carmel Church, as we know it today, was born. It stands as a testament to the power of unity, shared vision, and unwavering faith.
