“Christ and only Christ is the way.” That’s what the members of Mount Carmel Baptist Church believe. The Mount, as it’s affectionately known, has a rich history. It showcases the resilience of faith in the face of adversity.
Mount Carmel Baptist Church was founded on June 21, 1921. Rev. Gabriel Manuel Taylor was the founder. He guided the church in its early years. After his death in 1959, his son Rev. Spencer Taylor and the deacons continued his work. Rev. Ruben Lemon was later chosen as pastor.
The name Mount Carmel holds deep significance. It recalls a pivotal moment in the history of Israel. It reminds of God’s power and grace, as described in 1 Kings Chapter 18.
Hurricane Katrina dealt a devastating blow on August 29, 2005. The church building was destroyed. But the church is not just a building. The church is its people. The congregation persevered. They continued to worship at True Vine Baptist Church, thanks to Rev. Donald C. Jeanjacques. In August 2010, Mount Carmel members marched to their rebuilt church.
Mount Carmel Baptist Church has had only three pastors. These were founder Rev. Gabriel Manuel Taylor, Rev. Ruben Lemon, and Rev. Louis S. Jones. In 2007, Rev. Dr. Bruce McClue III became pastor. He revitalized many aspects of the church. Weekly Bible classes and a quarterly newsletter called “The Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Herald” were reintroduced. The soul winning ministry was revitalized. A CD recording ministry was created for members unable to attend services. Pastor McClue visits the sick and prays for his members. His eagerness and drive are appreciated by the congregation.
Mount Carmel Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It’s a place where people come together. They serve God, serve each other and mankind. The church looks forward to continuing its mission. They spread the message of hope and salvation in the community. Mount Carmel is more than just a church. It’s a family united in faith and love.
