Founded in 1956 Mount Carmel Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. This wasn’t just a building project. It was a labor of love fueled by the unwavering belief of Reverend Dr Kenneth Lawrence Folkes and five dedicated charter members. Imagine them laying the very first bricks. Sister Ethel Brooks even brought her family to help. They raised funds and worked tirelessly.

Mount Carmel Baptist Church wasn’t just built on Prospect Avenue in the Bronx. It was built on sacrifice. It grew from a small room in a funeral home to the large edifice you see before you today. Hundreds of ministries thrive within these walls a true reflection of its enduring spirit.

After 31 years of dedicated service Reverend Folkes retired. However his vision continued through Reverend Anthony Lowe. Reverend Lowe who arrived in 1987 guided the church through expansion and spiritual renewal. New ministries blossomed. Existing ones were revitalized.

The church’s outreach expanded beyond its walls. They partnered with a domestic violence shelter providing Christmas cheer for years. They also supported a local school with backpacks and supplies. A prison outreach ministry called Lighthouse Ministry guides individuals re-entering society. This church truly embraces its role in the community.

In 1993 the church saw history in the making. Deacon Lorna Wyatt became the first female ordained at Mount Carmel. In 2016 she was appointed the first female chair of the Diaconate Ministry another milestone. Mount Carmel consistently pushes boundaries. It embraces progressive values.

The church observes the liturgical seasons. Special services mark Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday. Paraments reflect the liturgical colors. Advent is celebrated with candle lighting music and meditation. This place is a living embodiment of faith.

Mount Carmel Baptist Church is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant community. It’s a beacon of hope. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and unwavering commitment to serving others. This church has made a lasting impact on the Bronx and beyond. Its history is a story of growth adaptation and service. A true testament to the power of faith.
