What if walls could whisper the laughter and learning of generations? Here at Mount Cameron Primary School, they just might. Mount Cameron Primary School isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant hub nestled in East Kilbride, on Blacklaw Drive. The school opened its doors in 1972, and it has been nurturing young minds ever since. Mount Cameron Primary School embraces diversity, valuing every student and family. The original school building underwent a transformation from April 2006 to April 2007. Now, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with cutting-edge technology stands in its place. Mount Cameron Primary houses a mainstream school with around 212 pupils. It also boasts a Gaelic Unit with approximately 80 children. This unit offers Gaelic Medium Education. The aim is to develop pupils’ Gaelic language skills and foster personal growth through Gaelic literature and culture. Children typically enter the Gaelic Unit from the Gaelic Nursery within the school, starting in Primary 1. For the first two years, the curriculum is entirely in Gaelic. In Primary 3, English reading and writing are introduced. By Primary 6 and 7, the children even begin learning French. The school follows the 5-14 Programmes of Study, encompassing languages, mathematics, sciences, technology, social subjects, health and well-being, expressive arts, and religious and moral education. Mount Cameron Primary also has two nurseries. One offers Gaelic medium education and the other English medium education. The school encourages parent involvement. Noticeboards display planned activities for the nurseries and the Mounties Prefive Unit. These early years programs are based on the South Lanarkshire Council ‘Learning for Living’ curriculum. This framework incorporates key elements of “A Curriculum Framework for Children 3 to 5”. The curriculum covers emotional, personal and social development, communication and language, knowledge and understanding of the world, expressive and aesthetic development, and physical development and movement. The school has a Pupil Council with representatives from each class. The council has a budget and acts on the ideas and suggestions of the pupils. Mount Cameron Primary School also has an active ECO Committee. This committee, made up of Primary 5 pupils, focuses on environmental responsibility and also manages its own budget. A friendly house system (Barra, Iona, Mull, and Skye) encourages healthy competition and teamwork among students. Mount Cameron Primary School is more than bricks and mortar.
