“The Place,” a beacon of hope and faith. That’s what they call Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Right here in the heart of Houston, this church has been a cornerstone of the community for almost a century. It’s seen it all, from the Great Depression to the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church actually traces its roots back to the early 1930s, a time of great hardship for many. Back then, a small group of believers, led by the Reverend Steward, started meeting in the “Baytown Woods.” Their faith was strong, even in the face of adversity. Over the years, Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church moved to its current location in Central Heights. It witnessed steady growth under the leadership of four dedicated pastors. Then, in 1968, a man named Reverend Willie B. Ridgell took the helm. He led Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church for 43 years. Under his guidance, the church blossomed into a refuge for the lost and a source of strength for the community. But in 2010, Reverend Ridgell was called home to his eternal rest. The year 2011 brought new leadership in the form of Reverend Raphael D. Montgomery. A son of Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church himself, Reverend Montgomery brought a fresh perspective and a deep understanding of the community’s needs. He’s been guiding the church ever since, carrying on the legacy of faith, hope, and service that defines Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. They are dedicated to spreading the Gospel and uplifting the people, proving that even in the hustle and bustle of a city like Houston, a place of peace and spiritual growth can thrive.
