In 1847, a small group of believers ignited a flame that would become Mount Calvary Baptist Church. They started as Hope Chapel, a branch of Stanton Street Baptist Church. Their journey began downtown. It eventually led them uptown to West 57th Street.

The striking Gothic Revival style church built in 1883 was a landmark. It was later replaced by a 16-story building in 1931. This innovative structure housed both the church and the Hotel Salisbury. The church’s history is rich with fascinating stories. It became an early adopter of radio broadcasting in 1923. Its program, “Tell It From Calvary,” shared its message far and wide. Famous figures like Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton have worshipped within its walls. Even renowned evangelists like Billy Graham and Billy Sunday have graced its pulpit. The church’s commitment to music is evident in the two Steinway grand pianos donated by the celebrated pianist Van Cliburn. He would often attend services while residing at the Hotel Salisbury.
Mount Calvary Baptist Church has always strived to stay relevant and meet the needs of its community. In the 19th century, Pastor Robert S. MacArthur pioneered open-air tent revivals and championed international missions. During the Civil Rights era, under the leadership of Stephen F. Olford, Mount Calvary desegregated. Even as the neighborhood around it transformed, Mount Calvary remained a steadfast beacon of faith. The original 1883 structure was demolished in 2022. It paved the way for a modern office building. This new building includes a dedicated space for the church, ensuring its continued presence on 57th Street. During the reconstruction, the congregation temporarily gathered at Hunter College and online. They maintained their commitment to worship and fellowship.
