Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Savannah’s history, stands the Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. A beacon of faith and resilience, its story begins not within grand halls, but in the heart of Yamacraw. A place where the needs of the Black community often went unaddressed. Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church emerged from this void, a testament to the power of faith and community. In 1896, Reverend Abe Holmes, pastor of a church on West Boundary Street, invited Reverend William A. Daughtry from Virginia to lead a revival. Reverend Daughtry felt a calling to Savannah, a place where he believed God had work for him to do. On November 10, 1897, Reverend Daughtry’s vision took form. With the support of fellow worshippers, he founded the Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Their first sanctuary was a humble rented house at the corner of Lumber and Congress Streets. The church’s first convert and baptized member was Sister Cornelia Thomas. The early congregation included individuals like Brother Primus Frazier, Sister Martha Davis, Sister Mary Harvey, and many more. These founding members laid the foundation for a community of faith that would thrive for generations. For six years, the congregation worshipped in that simple house, growing in number and spirit. The first deacons ordained were Brother Allen Jones, Brother Jake Hammond, Brother Albert Bryan, Brother Abraham Middleton, and Brother Oliver Daily. These men played crucial roles in shaping the church’s early development. Time marched on, and Mount Bethel continued to grow, evolving alongside the city it served. On March 6, 2016, Pastor Michael C. Smith, Sr. was installed as the ninth pastor of Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. His arrival marked a new chapter in the church’s continuing journey. From its humble beginnings in a rented house to its present-day standing, Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church has remained a steadfast presence in Savannah. Its story is a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and the vision of those who dared to believe in something bigger than themselves.
