“Ever feel like turning back time?” I ask. We are standing before the majestic Moulin de la Citadelle. This place has witnessed centuries unfold. The Moulin de la Citadelle is more than just an old mill. It’s a symbol of Lille’s resilience.

Lille was snatched from Spain by French troops in 1667. Soon after, Louis XIV ordered a fortress built. Vauban, the brilliant military engineer, presented his plans to the King. His design was chosen. Construction commenced in 1668. Simon Vollant, Lille’s master mason, oversaw the work. By 1671, the Citadelle was operational. Vauban then shaped the city by building a new neighborhood nearby.

Vauban dubbed the Citadelle the “Queen of Citadels”. It became a matrix for most of his later designs. Situated on Flanders’ border, it formed part of a network of fortified towns. This network stretched from Gravelines to Maubeuge-Rocroi. From Lille, Vauban supervised the construction of citadels and canals in the North. These controlled the border between France and Belgium.

The Citadel’s design was simple but effective. No wall could be approached without facing fire from another. It was built west of the city on marshland. This strategic location used the swamp for defense. Locks and water gates could flood 1,700 hectares to a depth of 55 cm.

The Moulin de la Citadelle played a crucial role within this fortress. It was used for grinding grain. This ensured a steady food supply for the soldiers inside. Imagine the millers working tirelessly. They ground wheat into flour. This flour was essential for baking bread.

Around the Citadelle, buildings formed a pentagonal shape around the Place d’Armes. This area was for gatherings and exercises. The buildings blended Lille’s style with French classicism. There were pavilions for officers, a church, workshops and even casemates. Vauban made sure the garrison didn’t live among the townspeople. He built casernes around the Place d’Armes. These barracks housed the troops. Each building had a pavilion for officers. The attics sheltered servants.

The Citadelle faced sieges. During the War of Spanish Succession, imperial armies took Lille in 1708. The city surrendered. The Citadelle held out until supplies ran out. In 1792, 35,000 Austrians besieged Lille. The city resisted victoriously.

Today, the Citadelle is a historic monument. It houses the Rapid Reaction Corps France. This is the French army’s deployable headquarters. About 450 soldiers from 14 allied nations reside here.

The area around the Citadelle has evolved. It features family activities and green spaces. The Bois de Boulogne provides a vast recreational area. The canal de la Deûle surrounds the fortress. It enhances the natural environment. The Moulin de la Citadelle stands as a testament to Lille’s past. It also represents its ongoing story. A story of defense, adaptation and enduring spirit.
