Where did the magic of Motown begin? Right here at the Motown Museum. This unassuming house on West Grand Boulevard is more than just a building. It is the birthplace of a sound that captivated the world.

The Motown Museum stands as a testament to the legacy of Motown Records. It honors the artists and the music that shaped generations. Berry Gordy bought this house in 1959. He transformed it into Motown’s first headquarters and recording studio. This building became known as Hitsville U.S.A.

Imagine this room as Studio A. This is where legends like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder recorded timeless hits. Feel the energy that permeated these walls. Visualize the Funk Brothers laying down the iconic Motown sound.

Berry Gordy’s vision turned this Detroit house into a musical powerhouse. In 1959, he formed Tamla Records and bought this property. The photography studio at the back was converted into a recording space. This studio operated almost around the clock. The Gordys lived upstairs.

Within seven years, Motown expanded to occupy seven neighboring houses. Hitsville U.S.A. housed administrative offices and Studio A. The upper floor served as living quarters and later as the artists and repertoire department. Other houses became Jobete Publishing offices, finance departments and artist development spaces.

By 1966, Motown employed over 450 people and had a gross income of $20 million. This success propelled Motown to new heights. In 1967, Gordy purchased a mansion in Detroit’s Boston-Edison Historic District. In 1968, he bought the Donovan building for Detroit offices.

In 1972, Gordy relocated Motown’s headquarters to Los Angeles. But the original Hitsville studios remained. Many fans felt the company’s soul was lost after the move. Esther Gordy Edwards stayed in Detroit. She preserved Studio A and the Motown legacy.

Since 1985, Hitsville U.S.A. has been the Motown Museum. It showcases costumes, photos and records from Motown’s golden era. You can visit Studio A. See Berry Gordy’s apartment as it was in the 1960s.

Paul McCartney visited the Motown Museum in 2011. He wanted to play the Steinway grand piano in Studio A. The piano was not in playing condition. McCartney supported its restoration. In 2012, he and Berry Gordy played it at a charity event. This piano is now on display in Studio A.

The Motown Museum continues to inspire. It is currently undergoing a $50 million expansion. This will create interactive exhibits and recording studios. The Motown Museum is more than just a museum. It is a celebration of Detroit’s musical heritage and a source of inspiration for future generations.
