Built for Expo 67 the Montreal Marriott Chateau Champlain hotel stands tall. It was designed by Roger D’Astous and Jean-Paul Pothier. D’Astous a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. The hotel’s distinctive arched windows. They are reminiscent of Wright’s work. Some call it the “cheese grater”. The hotel opened on January 11 1967. It was then the tallest hotel in Canada. Canadian Pacific Hotels built it. They wanted to accommodate the crowds visiting Expo 67. Buck Crump the chairman proposed the name. It honored Samuel de Champlain the explorer. CP Hotels sold the Chateau Champlain in 1991. Marriott took over management in 1995. The hotel boasts 596 guest rooms and 19 suites. It also features a health and fitness center. The hotel’s arched windows. They were meant to complement Windsor Station’s Romanesque arches. Both are Canadian Pacific properties. The Chateau Champlain.
