Did the name “Bloomingdale” ever cross your mind as you stood before Most Holy Name of Jesus Church? This magnificent structure, completed in 1900, stands on the site of a much humbler predecessor. Most Holy Name of Jesus Church’s story begins in 1868, in a then-rural area called Bloomingdale. A simple wooden church, costing a mere $3,000, was erected on the corner of Bloomingdale Road (now Broadway) and 97th Street. It served a growing congregation eager for a spiritual home. This original structure, dedicated by Archbishop John McCloskey, marked the humble beginnings of Most Holy Name of Jesus Church. Decades later, the present Gothic Revival masterpiece we see today replaced this modest building. Designed by Thomas Henry Poole, the current Most Holy Name of Jesus Church was constructed in stages between 1891 and 1900. The basement was finished first, in 1892. The cornerstone of the main structure was laid in 1898, a momentous occasion celebrated with a grand parade. Finally, in 1900, Archbishop Corrigan dedicated the completed church. The steeple, a defining feature of the church’s silhouette, was added later, in 1918. The imposing structure, built entirely of pink Milford granite, features intricately carved entrances and towers. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking interior. The vast space is renowned for its hammer-and-beam ceiling, crafted from polished wood. American quartered oak woodwork adds to the richness of the space. Light-colored columns, strategically placed, create a stunning contrast against the darker hues of the ceiling. Look up to admire the stained-glass windows that illuminate the interior with vibrant colors and depict scenes from the life of Christ. The sanctuary boasts five marble altars, each a work of art. The high altar, a centerpiece of Gothic artistry, originally showcased a detailed carving of the Last Supper, inspired by Da Vinci’s masterpiece. This carving was later moved to the front of a new main altar. Flanking the high altar are two side altars. One is dedicated to Mary, the other to Joseph. Two more altars, located outside the communion rail, honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus and St. Anne. In 1937, a magnificent four-manual M.P. Moller pipe organ, Opus 6570, was installed, enhancing the church’s musical offerings. Unfortunately, a fire in 1997 caused significant damage to the organ. Most Holy Name of Jesus Church, however, has not only been a place of worship but also a beacon of social justice. It has played an active role in community affairs, advocating for the rights of its neighbors and organizing interfaith events. Most Holy Name of Jesus Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
