Feel the ancient stones beneath your feet. This is the Mosquée Ibn Jelloun.

The Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen stands before you a testament to centuries of faith and history. Its origins are shrouded in a slight mystery some say it was built in 1471 others point to the 16th century. It all started with Moulay Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami the city’s founder or perhaps his son Moulay Mohamed. The mosque is more than just a place of worship. It was the heart of Chefchaouen the place where local rulers pledged allegiance to the Sultan. Royal decrees were read here echoing through the very stones you now touch.

Notice the octagonal minaret. Its elegant shape dates from the late 17th century. This architectural detail is a clue to the mosque’s past. It mirrors the style of minarets built under the governorship of Ali ibn Abdallah Errifi in Tangier and Asilah. The minaret is decorated in three tiers blind arches with different profiles some round some polylobed some like intricate lambrequins. The highest tier features zellij tiles in vibrant hues. Red ochre accents add a touch of warmth. The top is beautifully whitewashed.

Step inside the courtyard. Imagine the sounds of the past the call to prayer the murmur of scholars in the madrasa. The madrasa a school of religious sciences existed within the mosque itself. Students studied fiqh Islamic jurisprudence here living in an attached dormitory.

The main prayer hall is vast and impressive. It’s a hypostyle hall with eight naves divided by rows of horseshoe arches. The interior is largely undecorated a style common to mosques in Chefchaouen. Yet the red tile roof provides a vibrant contrast to the simpler interior. The mosque is a space of quiet contemplation a place where the beauty of simplicity speaks volumes. This modest yet stunning structure was renovated many times. The 19th and 20th centuries saw restorations. The current entrance portal was added during one of these updates. A final restoration in 2006 ensured that this important place continues to serve the community.

The Mosquée Ibn Jelloun is more than just a building. It is a living link to the past a place where history whispers secrets through the wind and the sun. This is a place of peace and reflection a space where faith and community intertwine. Remember that moment as you continue your journey through Chefchaouen.
