“Why Lebanon?” King Hassan II wondered aloud in 1969. That year, the first Islamic Summit convened in Rabat. To honor this event, he named this mosque in Agadir the Mosquée du Liban.

Welcome. We stand before the Mosquée du Liban. It is a spiritual haven in Morocco. The mosque is also known as the Lebanese Mosque. It is one of Agadir’s largest mosques.

After the earthquake devastated Agadir, the city needed rebuilding. The Mosquée du Liban was built as part of this reconstruction. It was a modern mosque with earthquake-resistant construction.

The mihrab was traditionally designed. Decorative motifs and Quran verses were sculpted on plaster. Tubular columns supported square domes. These formed the building’s roof.

In 2000, on the 40th anniversary of Agadir’s reconstruction, the Mosquée du Liban was renovated. It was enlarged with contributions from the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs. Generous benefactors also helped. The prayer hall was expanded. A room for women was added upstairs. Additional facilities included restrooms, ablution rooms, a library and housing for the imam and muezzin.

The expansion preserved the building’s harmony. Moroccan artisans used their talent and imagination. They transformed it into a jewel of traditional Moroccan architecture. The minaret is a key feature. It stands out with its architectural design. The exterior walls are simple. Vaulted cavities surround them. Some have windows. Others have interior doors. Plaster carvings with a green background cover much of the minaret. This gives the mosque an authentic Islamic character.

Visitors often admire the peaceful atmosphere. Lush gardens and pathways invite exploration. The architecture showcases traditional Moroccan elements. Towering minarets and crafted arches draw the eye. Though primarily a place of worship, tourists are welcome. They can admire its beauty and learn about local culture.

Remember to dress modestly. Respect the customs of this sacred space. Consider a guided tour. Learn more about the mosque’s history and architecture.

Visiting the Mosquée du Liban offers a glimpse into the community’s spiritual life. It provides tranquility. Take a moment to appreciate this blend of history, culture and faith. As you leave, carry with you the serenity of this beautiful mosque. It is a testament to Agadir’s resilience and its rich heritage.
