How many mosques have you seen that are named after a beloved brother? Here, before us, stands the magnificent Sheikh Hazza Bin Sultan Mosque. It’s a testament to a unique bond, a tribute from one powerful brother to another. Sheikh Hazza Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the mosque’s namesake, wasn’t a ruler in the traditional sense. Instead, he served as the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region, appointed by his brother, Sheikh Shakhbut. Sheikh Hazza was a respected figure, known for his deep understanding of tribal affairs and, interestingly enough, his love for falconry. He shared this passion with his younger brother, Sheikh Zayed, the future ruler of Abu Dhabi and the UAE’s first president. Sheikh Hazza’s life was marked by turbulent times. He was born in Mujib, a village in the Western Region, somewhere between 1905 and 1907. He witnessed political upheaval, fleeing with his family after a coup that saw his father killed. He played a key role in navigating tribal disputes and maintaining stability in his region. Sheikh Hazza was even involved in the Buraimi Dispute, a territorial conflict with Saudi Arabia. He represented his brother at the Geneva Court during the arbitration attempts. Sadly, his health declined during this period. Despite seeking treatment abroad, he passed away on January 20, 1958. The Sheikh Hazza Bin Sultan Mosque stands as a beautiful reminder of his contributions and his strong bond with his brother, Sheikh Shakhbut. It’s a place of peace and reflection, honoring a man who dedicated his life to serving his people and his family.
