Mosque Al-Qiblatayn – Mosque of the Two Qiblas

A hush fell over the crowd in Medina. We stand before the Mosque Al-Qiblatayn, a place where history dramatically shifted. Mosque Al-Qiblatayn translates to “Mosque of the Two Qiblas.” This mosque holds a unique position in the story of Islam. It witnessed a pivotal moment, a change in the direction of prayer. Initially, Muslims prayed towards Jerusalem, towards the Masjid al-Aqsa. Imagine the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) leading prayer here in Medina, facing Jerusalem. Then, in the second year of Hijra, during the prayer of Dhuhr (or possibly Asar, accounts vary), a revelation descended. The Quranic verse from Surah al-Baqarah 2:144 commanded the change: “Verily, We have seen the turning of your (Muhammad’s) face towards the heaven. Surely, We shall turn you to a Qiblah (prayer direction) that shall please you, so turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid Al-Haram (at Makkah). And wheresoever you people are, turn your faces (in prayer) in that direction.” In the middle of the prayer, within the Mosque Al-Qiblatayn, the Prophet (PBUH) turned towards Makkah. His companions, following his lead, also shifted their direction. This moment solidified the Ka’bah in Makkah as the permanent Qibla for Muslims. Mosque Al-Qiblatayn once housed two mihrabs, reflecting this transition. One mihrab pointed towards Jerusalem, the other towards Makkah. Today, only the Makkah-facing mihrab remains. The former one has been respectfully covered. This change was not just a physical reorientation. It symbolized a break from the past and a declaration of Islam’s independent identity. While joyful for Muslims, this event brought mourning to some Jewish communities. They had hoped the Qibla would remain in Jerusalem. Some even approached the Prophet (PBUH), offering to follow him if he reversed the change. The response was another revelation, documented in Surah al-Baqarah 2:145, reinforcing the finality of the new Qibla. Masque Al-Qiblatayn stands as a testament to this pivotal moment, a tangible reminder of a divine command that reshaped the landscape of Islamic practice.
