Have you ever seen a mosque that has become the inspiration for thousands of church towers? We are standing right in front of the Koutoubia Mosque. Its imposing minaret, built in the striking Almohad style, has been a beacon for seven centuries. The Koutoubia Mosque, located in the heart of Marrakech, is Morocco’s greatest mosque. The mosque’s minaret inspired two other iconic structures: the Giralda, Seville’s famous tower, and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. It is not just a mosque, but a symbol of the city and a reminder of the Almohads dynasty’s reign. It took nearly 60 years to build and is a testament to the meticulous craftmanship of the Almohad era. You can see this era’s special care in the minaret’s beautiful geometric arches and intricate carvings. The minaret is 250 feet high. If you take a close look, you will see the four copper balls at the top of the minaret. Legend tells that these balls were originally made of gold—a gift from the wife of the sultan Yaqub al-Mansur. She melted down her precious jewelry to atone for her breaking of the fast during Ramadan. Although the mosque is not open to non-Muslims, you can still experience the Koutoubia Mosque’s towering beauty.
