In 1879, the “Verein zur Verschönerung der Stadt Freiburg” took action. This translates to the Association for the Beautification of the City of Freiburg. They initiated the park’s creation. The grounds around the Waldsee lake were transformed. Maximilian Wilhelm Schmöger planned and cared for the Möslepark. He was the city gardener at the time. His 1885 design embraced the Volkspark idea.
Volksparks were meant for everyone not just the nobility. They met the need for green spaces in growing cities. Möslepark spans 11.5 hectares. That is quite a bit of space. The Konrad-Guenther-Park sits on its north side. This area was once used for reforestation. The Möslepark is part of a larger protected area. It is called “Lorettoberg-Günterstal-Littenweiler”. That area covers 20.2 hectares.

Originally the park was a landscape park. It had a late schematic style. After World War I, it was redesigned. Yet it kept its geometric layout. Old oaks and hornbeams were part of the plan. Some exotic trees were added. The design resembled an English landscape garden. It had a play of light and shadow.
