Today, we stand before the Mortuary Temple of Thutmose III, a structure that whispers tales of a mighty pharaoh and the mysteries surrounding its construction. The Mortuary Temple of Thutmose III, nestled within the Deir el-Bahari complex, isn’t as imposing as Hatshepsut’s grand temple nearby. Yet, its position, perched on a rocky platform overlooking the earlier structures, hints at a calculated move by Thutmose III. Built in the last decade of his reign, around 1435-1425 BC, this temple speaks volumes about the pharaoh’s relationship with his predecessors. Imagine the audacity of constructing your temple literally above those of your ancestors, especially considering one belonged to Hatshepsut, his stepmother and, for a time, co-ruler. Some scholars believe this placement was intentional, a way for Thutmose III to assert his dominance and legitimize his reign after Hatshepsut’s impressive, albeit controversial, time on the throne. Despite its smaller size, the Mortuary Temple of Thutmose III played a key role in the “Beautiful Feast of the Valley”. This annual festival saw the sacred barque of Amun journey from Karnak Temple across the Nile, ultimately reaching Deir el-Bahari. It’s believed that Thutmose III intended his temple to receive the god’s barque, potentially usurping the role of Hatshepsut’s temple in this important ritual. Unfortunately, the temple met an untimely end, likely due to an earthquake during the Twenty-first Dynasty. Today, only fragments of its decorated walls remain, offering us tantalizing glimpses of its former glory. The temple lay forgotten beneath the sands of time until the 1960s when a Polish archaeological team unearthed its secrets. These fragments, combined with ongoing research, slowly piece together the story of this intriguing temple, a testament to one of Egypt’s most powerful pharaohs and his lasting impact on the landscape of Deir el-Bahari.
