Perhaps Morsenchio seems like just another suburb today. Yet this area holds a unique story. It is a piece of Milan with roots stretching back centuries. Let’s explore Morsenchio together.

Morsenchio’s story starts long ago. Documents show it existed as early as the 13th century. The village grew around a small church. This church was dedicated to the Beatissima Vergine Maria. A small cemetery also stood nearby. Even then, Morsenchio was a distinct community.

In 1571, San Carlo visited Morsenchio. He was the Archbishop of Milan. His pastoral visit highlights the area’s religious importance. It shows Morsenchio as a place of faith and community.

Morsenchio once was its own municipality. Its borders touched Corpi Santi to the north and west. Linate lay to the east. San Donato and Nosedo were to the south. In 1751, Morsenchio had only 123 residents. All its land was privately owned. This included the Ponte Lambro farmhouses. No public authority existed here.

In 1808, Napoleon annexed Morsenchio to Milan. The population had grown to 200. But this change did not last. When the Austrians returned, they reversed Napoleon’s decree. Morsenchio continued to grow slowly. By 1861, it had 314 residents.

The municipality of Morsenchio was suppressed in 1870. It became part of Mezzate. Later, Mezzate changed its name to Linate. Finally, in 1925, Morsenchio became part of Milan. This happened during a redefinition of the city’s southeastern borders.

After World War II, Montedison built factories here. From the 1960s onward, Morsenchio saw significant urban development. This transformed the ancient village into a modern suburb.

Today, Morsenchio is integrated into Milan. Yet its history remains visible. The name “Morsenchio” itself is a reminder of its past. This area has transformed over time. It grew from a small village with ancient roots to a modern Milanese suburb.
