Isn’t it incredible to think that the Morocco Pavilion we’re standing in front of is so authentic? It’s actually the only pavilion in Epcot’s World Showcase where the country’s government was directly involved in the design and creation. King Hassan II of Morocco was so invested in showcasing his country’s beauty and culture that he sent his own artisans all the way to Florida!

The Morocco Pavilion opened in 1984, making it the first expansion to Epcot’s World Showcase. It was designed to transport us to a Moroccan city, complete with a stunning replica of the Koutoubia Minaret, a famous landmark in Marrakech.

As you wander through the pavilion, notice the intricate details, especially the mosaics. These vibrant and complex tileworks are not just beautiful, they reflect a key aspect of Islamic art. Due to religious beliefs, the mosaics don’t depict people or animals. Instead, you’ll find mesmerizing geometric patterns, showcasing the creativity and skill of Moroccan artisans.

In fact, these artisans didn’t just create the mosaics. They meticulously crafted many elements of the pavilion, from the carved plaster to the stunning tile work found throughout. They even constructed a traditional Moroccan house, the Fes House, giving a glimpse into authentic Moroccan life.

Sadly, the Moroccan government ended its sponsorship of the pavilion in 2020. However, the heart and soul of Morocco are still very much alive in this meticulously crafted corner of Epcot. As you explore the bustling marketplace, savor delicious Moroccan cuisine, or admire the intricate details, remember the dedication of King Hassan II and the artisans. They brought a true taste of Morocco to life right here in Orlando.
