Imagine, if you will, Morningside as a canvas. This canvas was slowly painted with history and growth. Morningside is a southside suburb in the City of Brisbane. It is located five kilometers east of Brisbane CBD. In 2021, Morningside had a population of 11755 people.
Morningside is said to be named after David Longlands’ local estate. The estate’s name might refer to a Scottish town. It could also refer to its location on Brisbane’s eastern side. Another theory suggests it was named for the morning sun. The sun would catch the banks of the river.
The area was first settled by Europeans in the early 1870s. At that time, the land was mainly used for agriculture. Dairy, sugarcane and tobacco were the main products. The old suburb of Colmslie was merged into Morningside. At the corner of Bennetts and Wynnum Roads lies the Bulimba Cemetery. It is also known as the Balmoral Cemetery. It dates back to 1875. Morningside began as a rural area. Small dairy and tobacco farms dotted the landscape. It became a popular residential area after the war.
In December 1884, “The Richmond Park Estate” was auctioned. It comprised 145 allotments. A map shows the area bordering Main Cleveland Road. It lies between Wynnum Road and Richmond Road in Morningside. The Bulimba Divisional Board offices and grounds were clearly marked.
In March 1920, land near Morningside Station was offered for sale. It was known as the “Morningside Estate”. Coronation Park estate Morningside was advertised for sale on 21 July 1923. The estate centered on Keralgerie Park in Morningside.
Morningside Infants Provisional School opened on 28 May 2023. In 1926, it became Morningside State School.
After World War I, a quarry was established. It provided bluestone for roads. By 1940, the quarry was filled. This created a swimming pool for residents. In 1948, the Australian diving championships were held there. After two drownings and typhoid detection by 1952, the quarry was drained. It was filled to create Keralgerie Park.
Electric trams operated along Wynnum and Riding Roads until 1969. They skirted the western edge of Morningside.
The Cairncross Dockyard was constructed in Morningside between 1942 and 1944. The facility closed in 2014. There was an attempt to list the site on the Queensland Heritage Register in 2022. The Queensland Heritage Council declined this in June 2023. The site was then offered for sale.
Morningside has several heritage-listed sites. These include the former Commonwealth Acetate of Lime Factory. You can also find Morningside State School, Balmoral Fire Station and the Morningside Air Raid Shelter.
Wynnum Road is Morningside’s main road. Morningside station connects the suburb to the Cleveland railway line.
Fazerdaze, also known as Amelia Murray, is a musician from Morningside. She released her first studio album titled “Morningside”. Mal Michael and Michael and Brett Voss are also notable residents. They are Australian rules footballers.
Today, Morningside blends modern suburban living with old industrial charm. Its history is etched in its streets and buildings. It is a place where the past meets the present.
